FIN 236 Unit 2

FIN 236 Unit 1

This semester, I’d like to focus on wheel work and carving and sculptural elements on vessels. I’m going to practice cylinders and mug handles, as well as experimenting with more glazes and colour. Of course, the specific way that I explore these things might change over time, but for now, I’m looking to do more organic shaped carving and utilizing thicker walls to carve into. With thinner walls, I’ll add more sculptural elements, again organic in style.

I’m excited about my new direction with the “series” project. I’m interested in the idea of “personal vessels”, and making them so personal that literally no one but you can really use them. My first attempt was personal but not exclusive. The dips and ridges of someone’s hand grasping a vessel are more universal than what I intend on experimenting with next. I think it’ll be interesting to see just how specific I can make the vessels.

I’m going to stick with taller, slab-built cylinders with bottoms as my primary form. Since it’s so simple in aesthetic and making, it’s a perfect blank canvas to experiment on.
