What will your subject matter be?  (or what have you noticed in the world that is motivating you to make these paintings?)

To Be Known and the art of knowing. I see and feel a lot of emotional disconnect between people in my life and I want to explore through a few different perspectives ie. The vulnerability, the freedom, the knowing, the being known, the different kinds of relationships that can foster that feeling, etc.

Describe your intended use of process and paint application:

I haven’t decided just yet whether to go with more figure-based subject or if I’ll do more abstract and representation, but that will impact what kind of paint application I use. If I go more figurative and realistic, I want to explore thin layers and glazes of paint. If I go abstract/representation, I’d use thicker, bolder strokes and lean more towards sculptural painting.

Describe your intended use of colour (descriptive, interpretive, expressive, etc.)  You may also talk about colour schemes, warm vs. cool, neutral vs. saturated, etc.

No matter the application of the paint, I want to really explore bold, highly saturated colours on neutral backgrounds. Playing with vibrational combinations (high contrast and “singing” colours), and with more subtle tonal shifts in the background. I might have to do some tests to see if movement in both the background colours and foreground colours would be too much.

What will the scale/support of your work be and how does this correspond to your subject matter?

As we talked about in the last critique, I think a larger scale provides me with more body-based movement, so if I’m going abstract I think the bigger scale the better. However, If I’m going for more realistic figures, I think I’d stick to no bigger than 5x4ft so that I could put more small details and let layers dry faster. Again, might be something to experiment on briefly before I decide.

What artists are you going to be looking to as influences for this project?

I really love Holly Warburton’s work. Her colour layering, implied detail, and just the quality of line that she uses is so beautiful. I’ll also be looking at Farley Aguilar, Vincent Giarrano, Daniel Ludwig, and Ron Hicks, but I’m sure this list will expand as I go.

What are your personal goals for these paintings?  Think about how you’d like to be engaged in the process as well as what type of experience you’d like to provide for a viewer.

I want to be much more engaged in the learning process of these paintings. I hope that there will be an obvious progression of skill and concept as I make them, and I want the viewer to get a sense of my theme throughout all of them. Though I do have a theme that I will consider deeply on how to convey, I think my main goal is just to have visible change and progression with each piece.
