When I chose which prompt to use for my final drawing, I was conscious of how to best show off what I’ve learned and what I feel most proud of in my drawings this term. I also wanted to use as many of the mediums we’ve explored this term as possible. I started with a pencil but quickly realized that I was being too precious with the linework when I should be treating the base sketch like a figure drawing from class. After that, I switched to compressed graphite and some conté pencil (since I haven’t really had the chance to explore those in this class). Then I filled in more of the value scale with sienna and black conté pencils, leaving white space for highlights. Once I was satisfied that I knew where I was going with the piece, I went in with some chalk pastels and blended them with my fingers, and then added a green ink base for the background. I had the face marked out before I added the collage, which was some famous art pieces from a calender I’ve been wanting to use. For the eyes and lips, I wanted to just go for something a little weirder and used some old coloured foil from easter chocolates that I always try to save. I really like how the drawing turned out, and I think I’ve learned a lot from this class on what drawing can really be and how it not only assists in other mediums of art, but is also its own medium.
